Overview - Installation Reports

App Installation is only the first step on a user's journey towards making an app a part of their daily routine, and a necessary part of their life.

If Installation is the first step, then opening the app up and getting acquainted is the real measure of success.

When installation data is overlaid with engagement behaviors, the importance of an app to the user can be better understood.

Utilizing Installation Data

  • Compare device installation of apps, both inside and outside of your business vertical.
  • Determine which apps have high levels of follow-up engagement post install.
  • Find the apps that tend to attract low usage and Inactive devices.
  • Trend active installing devices to find the apps that have long term post-install engagement history.
  • Trend apps to uncover the effectiveness of new user acquisition campaigns.
  • Look back to trend which apps were the most effective at converting installers to active users.

Installation / Uninstallation Definitions

Installed
A device installs an app when it has downloaded the app on the date, or within the date range, being considered. This count does not take into consideration post install actions like app uninstall or app engagement.

  • For Example: In a daily grain installation report where the installation count is 243,353 devices on Oct 3rd, all devices in that count must have installed the app on Oct 3rd. In a weekly or monthly report the same logic holds true.

Installed & Active
A device installs and is active with an app when it has both downloaded and engaged with the app on the date, or within the date range, being considered. Engagement is considered at least one (1) app focus event of two (2) consecutive seconds, or longer, in duration.

  • For Example: In a daily grain installation report where the installed and active count is 145,543 devices on Oct 3rd, all devices in that count must have installed the app on Oct 3rd, and also engaged with the app on Oct 3rd. In a weekly or monthly report the same logic holds true.

Installed & Inactive
A device installs but is Inactive with an app when it has downloaded the app but not engaged with it on the date, or within the date range, being considered. Engagement is considered at least one (1) app focus event of two (2) consecutive seconds, or longer, in duration.

  • For Example: In a daily grain installation report where the installed and Inactive count is 97,810 devices on Sept 17th, all devices in that count must have installed the app on Sept 17th, but not engaged with the app on Sept 17th. In a weekly or monthly report the same logic holds true.

Uninstalled
A device uninstalls an app when it has deleted the app on the date, or within the date range, being considered. This count does not take into consideration actions like date of app install or app engagement.

  • For Example: In a daily grain uninstallation report where the uninstall count is 34,765 devices on Oct 3rd, all devices in that count must have uninstalled the app on Oct 3rd. In a weekly or monthly report the same logic holds true.

Uninstalled & Active
A device uninstalls and is active with an app when it has both uninstalled and engaged with the app on the same date, or within the same date range. Engagement is considered at least one (1) app focus event of two (2) consecutive seconds, or longer, in duration.

  • For Example: In a daily grain installation report where the uninstalled and active count is 36,529 devices on Oct 3rd, all devices in that count must have uninstalled the app on Oct 3rd, and also engaged with the app on Oct 3rd. In a weekly or monthly report the same logic holds true.

Uninstalled & Inactive
A device uninstalls and is Inactive with an app when it has uninstalled the app and also not engaged with the app on the same date, or within the same date range. Engagement is considered at least one (1) app focus event of two (2) consecutive seconds, or longer, in duration.

  • For Example: In a daily grain installation report where the uninstalled and Inactive count is 65,592 devices on Sept 17th, all devices in that count must have uninstalled the app on Sept 17th, and also not have engaged with the app on Sept 17th. In a weekly or monthly report the same logic holds true.

🚧

ReInstallation Counting

The counts presented in the Installation Report page do not account for reinstallation. This means that its possible that Install counts provided in the reports on this page include both first time device installations as well as devices that have reinstalled a given app one (1) or more times.

Future versions of Insights will have dedicated reinstallation reporting functionality.

Installation Breakdown Report

992

Installation Breakdown for 3 different apps during an arbitrary date range.

The Breakdown bar chart displays the average counts of devices that install or uninstall a given app over a given date range. The data is presented as those devices that both have installed or uninstalled and have engaged with the app during the selected date range, and those devices that have installed or uninstalled the app, but have not engaged with it during the date range.

This chart presents a quick summary of installation, allowing for at-a-glance analysis of apps without having to perform offsite aggregations/averages of data from the accompanying time series breakdown of installation.

🚧

Breakdown Chart Scaling

All app data displayed in the Breakdown chart are scaled to the largest app in the report run. For example, in a report run that includes 3 apps with average installing device counts of 23.6k, 6.9k, and 13.1k, the bar charts are scaled to 23.6k, and all app data is visually represented comparative to that value.

Installation Over Time

1132

Installation Over Time for 3 different apps during an arbitrary date range.

The time series installation graph displays the precise (distinct/unique) counts of devices that install or uninstall a given app over a given date range. The data is presented as those devices that both have installed or uninstalled and have engaged with the app during the selected date range, and those devices that have installed or uninstalled the app, but have not engaged with it during the date range.

This graph presents a trendable micro view of installation over time, allowing for data-mining analysis of app growth trends.

🚧

Time Graph Scaling

Each app utilized in an installation report run are plotted in their own graph, in which the X-Axis for date is tied to all graphs, but the Y-Axis for install/uninstall counts is independently scaled to each app appropriate to its size. This is unlike the Activity Chart scaling, in which all apps are scaled relative to the largest app.

The benefit of independent scaling in the time series graphs is that apps with both large and small install/uninstall performance can be viewed comparatively without flattening trends. When a large and small app are placed on the same Y-Axis, the disparate relative size of each app reduces the ability to adequately appraise data shifts over time.

Installation Info Table

Installation Info table for 3 different apps during an arbitrary date range.

All data points from the time series trend graph are available for review and export via the Installation Info table beneath it.

The data in the table is exportable to CSV via the provided download button in the the upper right hand corner of the table.
